Welcome
to the Mozambique's National Directorate of Mines ::
Mozambique
is rich in mineral resources including gold, marble, heavy minerals from coastal
sands, pegmatite, iron ores, diatomite, bentonite, tantalite, graphite, precious
and semi-precious stones, bauxite, granite, phosphates, clays, asbestos, beryllium
and mica.
Over the past three years there has been an increase in private sector interest
in the mining sector.
- The government
is fully committed to attracting inward investment into Mozambique's mineral
industry, having set out a number of objectives for mineral resource development
over the next five years. These encompass increasing mineral production
and exports, creating an updated, reliable geological database, and improving
the industry's administrative, health and safety structure. To achieve this,
the government guarantees private-sector investors a stable legal and fiscal
framework within which to operate.
- Mineral sector
activity is governed by the 1986 Mining Act, as updated by amendments introduced
in 1994. Last year the cabinet, acting to improve the country's competitive
position in this area, approved a new mining and geological policy which,
taken together with the existing legislation, offers further encouragement
to private-sector participation in mining sector ventures. Final details
of the government's new regulations, aimed at promoting transparency and a competitive
investment environment that benefit both exploration companies and
the state, is available since 2002
